Kids Celebrate BRP 75th Anniversary with Hike at Folk Art Center
On Saturday, November 17th 2009, the Blue Ridge Parkway kicked off their yearlong celebration of the Parkway’s 75th anniversary. The event, held at the Parkway’s Folk Art Center, celebrated the history of and the people who helped create the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hundreds of people attended the event to listen to historians, family members of original Parkway builders, and Parkway stewards tell stories about how the Parkway evolved from an idea in the 1930’s into ‘Americas Favorite Journey’ today.
To help celebrate, the Kids in Parks program offered guided hikes to kids and their families. Along the trail, we discovered some of the many natural resources that have made the Parkway a special place for the last 75 years. From counting tree rings to see how old the trees were when the Parkway was first built to an appearance from the “rapping ranger” the program focused on the kid’s roles as future stewards of the Parkway’s next 75 years.
The event was a huge success, but the celebration is not over yet! Look for more 75th anniversary and special Kids in Parks events being scheduled within the next year. See you on the trail.
