Buncombe County High School Disc Golf League
Each player was given a brand new disc and earned points for their school just for playing; and, the Top 9 players earned bonus points for their teams for finishing in the top 1/3 of the field. In the end, North Buncombe High finished with 29 points, followed by Enka High with 22 points and Owen High with 20 points. Before the end of the school year, there will be 3 more tournaments, and the school with the highest total points will be crowned the 2011-2012 Buncombe County High School Disc Golf League Champions.
Bret Moore, an officer with the WNC Disc Golf Association said, “As far as we know, the Buncombe County High School Disc Golf League is the first high school disc golf league to be formed in the country… and therefore, by default, the world. The students of the Enka, Owen and North Buncombe High School disc golf clubs should be very proud.”
Jason Urroz, director of Kids in Parks program and president of the WNC Disc Golf Association said, “One of the best moments of the tournament came when a kid who had been getting 5’s and 6’s on every hole was lining up a 25’ birdie putt. Earlier in the round he had said to everyone in the group that he had never gotten a birdie before. Just before he was about to take his putt I said, ‘Hey man. Here’s your first birdie. Just throw it in the basket.’ To which he said, ‘Don’t jinx me.’ I replied, ‘You just made a putt just like this two holes ago, you got this.’ Needless to say, he made the putt and the whole group, even the kids from the other school, went crazy. What a way to get your first birdie.”
Eugene Jensen, teacher chaperon of the Owen High Disc Golf Club, said, “All the kids loved the event. In fact, they all, at various times throughout the school day today, came by my classroom to talk about how they played. They even scheduled an impromptu practice today, as I think they’ve been motivated to improve their game before the next event.”
Congratulations to all the players who represented their schools. It was a great day for disc golf (in the grand scheme of the sport), and a great day to disc golf (physically).
