Trail TRACKer of the Month - Ryland

by January 29, 2021

We are so proud of our Trail TRACKers, and that's why we like to recognize those who go out of their way to explore our trails. Each month, we honor at least one of these special explorers with the title of Trail TRACKer (or TRACKers) of the Month.

Meet Trail TRACKer of the Month Ryland (and his dog Levi)!
Ryland has so far TRACKed 17 TRACK Trails adventures!

What's your favorite TRACK Trail? Why?

My favorite TRACK Trails are the Peaks of Otter adventures and James River Trail of Trees adventure. I love exploring Johnson Farm and the Elk Run trail. But I also love TRACKing my own hikes and bike rides through “Backyard Adventures.”

What's your favorite TRACK Trail brochure adventure?

The “Johnson Farm Hide and Seek” brochure for the Johnson Farm Trail at Peaks of Otter. We always have a really neat experience on that trail. I've discovered an old piece of pottery there and lots of wildlife, and when the farm is open it is fun to explore the house.

What's the most exciting wildlife you've ever seen on a TRACK Trail?

“I have seen two bears! Timber rattlesnakes! And an uncommon Virginia Rail (bird) along the James River trail. Also, do mushrooms count? I like to hunt for morels along the trails too. And see how many species of mushrooms I can identify.

What's the longest hike you've ever done?

The longest hike I have done is Johnson Farm trail to Harkening Hill trail. It's about 5 miles and has a good incline. The steepest I have hiked is Sharp Top Mountain.

What is the coolest trail experience you've ever had?

Seeing and hearing bears! Collecting morels and then getting to cook and eat them! Discovering the old cemetery at Elks Run Trail. And always exploring Johnson Farm.

If you could go for a hike anywhere in the world, where would it be?

To continue exploring the Blue Ridge mountains right here in Virginia. They are unbeatable!
